description: Zit is free software under the GNU General Public License, version 2 only, the same license as git.
---

Zit is licensed under the **GNU General Public License, version 2 only** (`GPL-2.0-only`), the same license as git. The full text is in `LICENSE` in the source and at [gnu.org](https://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html).

| Package | Where | License |
|---|---|---|
| `zit` (the binaries `zit` and `git-zit`) | [crates.io/crates/zit](https://crates.io/crates/zit) and the release binaries | GPL-2.0-only |
| `pi-zit` (the Pi extension) | [npmjs.com/package/pi-zit](https://www.npmjs.com/package/pi-zit) | GPL-2.0-only |
| Autohand Sans and Autohand Mono, embedded in `zit web` | `src/web/fonts/` | SIL Open Font License 1.1 |

What the license means in short; the license text, not this summary, is what applies:

- You may run, study, change and share Zit, for any purpose.
- If you distribute Zit or a modified version, you must make the source available under the same license, and keep the copyright and license notices.
- Zit comes with **no warranty**, to the extent permitted by law (sections 11 and 12 of the license).

Running Zit on a repository does not put that repository under the GPL: Zit is a tool you run, and your code stays under its own license.

The Rust crates Zit depends on keep their own licenses; `cargo tree` lists them.
